Single-Issue Crusader Wants Free of Your Freedoms

A Mormon seminary teacher and anti-cannabis crusader David Lewis says he just wants to live in a place where he can be free of your freedoms.  He’s the Republican candidate for Rep. Margie MacDonald’s (D) house seat in Billings, HD 54.

His philosophy is simple, if not constitutional.  Lewis shared his views with the independent news magazine In These Times:

“while others are entitled to their freedoms, those who do not wish to be exposed to the freedoms of others are entitled to be free of those freedoms.”

To explain his vision, Lewis told a story about his seminary class:

Lewis asked his students at the Mormon seminary what laws they would pass if they were starting a city. One young lady said that she would outlaw cursing, says Lewis. “And a young man kind of immediately jumped on that one with both feet and said, ‘Ah, that’s against the right of free speech.’ “

But the champion of Lewis’ tale is the student who disregards the constitution in favor of Mormon doctrine:

“The point is, at the end of the class, one young lady piped up … ‘I don’t know if it’s legal or not to outlaw cursing,’ she said. ‘But I’d want to live there.’ “

So would Lewis it seems.   While voters are focused on jobs and the economy, Lewis’ sole focus is a single issue: the evils of medical marijuana.  It’s the only issue he’s spoken about at the Billings City Council, where he was the most vocal proponent of a ban on medical marijuana storefronts.

Lewis best known as the treasurer of “Safe Communities Safe Kids,” the recently-formed Billings group that decided the only aspect of safety it need focus on was medical marijuana, which Lewis describes as a “rope-a-dope” conspiracy to hook kids on drugs.

Speaking before the Billings City Council, Lewis said Montana is turning into “Gomorrah.” He claimed that:

“at least three medical marijuana facilities sprouting up around ‘nearly every single institution of elementary learning’ in Billings.”

Lewis says this was “intentional.”

Creating a society where he can be free from your freedoms is theme Lewis has drawn on before.  He was a vociferous participant in the comments section of a KULR-8 story on the failed signature gathering effort Lewis lead to overturn the voter-passed medical marijuana ballot initiative.  Late into the night, Lewis typed that he doesn’t want to keep ”those who want ‘Pot’ in their lives from having it.” He just wants to live “someplace where they don’t want to live because of the Laws against it,” which makes perfect sense.  Here’s the screenshot.

In another comment on the same story, he calls on others to join his crusade and “take your place as the Creators of a Nation.”  Screenshot here.  I hope he’s not talking about seceding already.  Typically, GOP-ers find it wise to wait until they are elected to start waving that flag.

  1. Drunks for Denny

Screw this guy. My man Denny has many HOA members growing medical marijuana in Rehberg estates.

He does not represent the mainstream (aka, the “one percenters”) of the Republican party.

Though, truth be told, we Republicans prefer cocaine over MJ. Helps us cut deals quicker.

  2. Debra

Did this man learn nothing from the very public fall of Jeff Essmann over his sponsorship of SB 423? I encourage you Mr. Lewis to google Jeff Essmann and then promptly withdraw from the race.

  3. Dave, he has hair, Lewis

I have never met the David Lewis from Billings, but want it noted that I have way more hair than he does. For purposes of establishing which one is which, I will use the title of Dave, he has hair, when I post on this blog.

  4. Blue Montana

So is David Lewis saying those who want the full Bill of Rights should move to another state, or that he wants to start a colony in which the U.S. Bill of Rights would not apply? I hope he comes here to clarify.

  5. Helena Boxes

Wait, so former Sen./ budget guy Dave Lewis of the Helena area is only the SECOND-most conservative guy in Montana named David/Dave Lewis? I’m confused. Isn’t the Real (Sen.) Davis Lewis actually sometimes a kind of reasonable guy, except when talking about the UN? So there’s some nut in Billings with the same name who’s an icky-sticky-hatin’ LSD-hating LDS guy?

  6. Observer

Oh no, not another one. What is it with these types that are drawn to the legislature. Earth to Lewis. JOBS!

  7. sNowWayter

Sorry, but this man is either lying or stupid or both. He says he doesn’t want to outlaw medical marijuana, he just wants to live somewhere with laws against it? Good lord.

As a 40 year army veteran with a 100% service connected disability, I wonder if he is another politician who thinks it’s ok to send us to war and then tell us we have to come back missing
limbs, and that we have to become addicted to oxycontin. (its the only pain reliever we get from the va)He has never served this country in uniform or he would know the pain we live with every day! Just like essman!

    More fun with Mormons!

Ya really gotta hand it to ol’ joey smith. He and his sidekick, Bring’em Young, were able to perpetrate one of the largest scams in history! All based on nooky! It should more accurately be called the Book of Nooky! The younger the better! It’s a bizarre cult based on gettin’ laid 24/7 by the youngest nubiles around! Wow! Even I’M not that big of a pervert to think up a religeeon like that! (although I like the premise of gettin’ laid into heaven!)

But anyone familiar with the Moron religion doesn’t find anything strange with mr. lewass’s remarks. The Morons never WANTED/INTENDED to be part of the USA. That’s why they went to Utah. They figured that after the Civil War, they country would be so damaged that they would be able to establish their OWN perverted little country in the west! Nookyville! Or sumthin’ like that.

And it might have worked had not the president pointed canons at Bring’em Young’s house and explained to him in specific detail that if they tried any funny stuff like secession, HE, Bring’em Young, would be the first to go to planet Kolob!

And now, we have one of these wierdo perverts runnin’ for prez! Ol’ joey smith and Bring’em Young would be SO proud!

(methinks it’s time to train the canons on’em again!)

BTW, just WHAT the hell is a seminary for Morons for? Do they have priests? They don’t NEED priests! They are pervy enough as it is!)

Free from MY FREEDOMS? Ok what all offends him? This is a question I have for my friends on the left and the right, you know I got a closet full of and I even have one in my pickup truck, rifles, pistols, and shotguns, does this make me a mass murderer? I also have a six pack of beer in my fridge, and I know my Mormon friends love that, but does this make me a drunk? I also have a pickup truck in my driveway, does this mean Im out at night driving around drunk? I also have a box of Trojan Condoms in the jocky box of that pickup truck, does this make me a rapist? Seriously this is America, you are bound to be offended at some point. I personally hate rap music infact I think they should have put a big C in front of the R when they named rap music, aka CRap music. But you know what I can ignore it. I dont have to listen to it. Done. Good night people are suffering and dying here and he wants to deny them THEIR medicine cause he does not like it. Well I hate his temples, infact they ruin my views, maybe I should run for the legislature on a platform of burning down Mormon Temples, cause they ruin the environmental scienic views.

Nothing pisses me off more then people wanting to take away my choices, or limit my choices. So here is this, if you dont like guns, fine dont own one. You dont like same sex marriage, fine dont marry somebody of the same sex. You dont like abortion, fine dont have an abortion. You dont like marijuana, fine dont smoke marijuana, you dont like cigarettes, fine dont smoke them either. You dont like anchovies on pizza, fine dont order pizza with anchovies. See how simple this is. Dont take away my freedoms, if you dont like something dont engage in it. I dont like Mormon temples cluttering up the landscape, so you know what, Im not going to go to a Moron temple. Or read their fairytale book that ought to have once obon a time at the start of it. Really its that simple.

Mr. Lewis states that “those who do not wish to be exposed to the freedoms of others are entitled to be free of those freedoms” or, I guess, any individual can ignore those freedoms they disagree with. Each of us individually are free to choose the rights and freedoms we want to be subject to. So, the only conclusion I can reach is that Mr. Lewis acknowledges that individuals have free will (can think for themselves) and that he’s actually advocating for “choice”?

    • lisa o'conner

It doesn’t seem to be that Mr. Lewis understands what point he is even making. Logic doesn’t seem to be his forte.

If ONLY the Pope has the balls of THIS nun! Poor pope nazi the first. He’s gonna be one pissed off pontiff to see the nuns kickin’ his nazi ass off the front pages of the newspapers again! You don’t have to be around anyone who relies on Cannabis as their medicine..None of your FREEDOMS are being taken away. You are a Moron!

I think people forget that Medical Marijuana was a cash crop for George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. That it indeed had medicinal uses back then and also made sturdy ropes we can still buy at ace hardware today although Hemp rope is imported from other countries.

    Just saying!

I find the whole BS about Mary Jane tied up in a lot more urban legend……….. than fact!

    • Heath Robinson

It wasn’t only hemp they were growing. They also grew indian hemp, which was an indica. Washington mentions culling males, which isn’t done with hemp. It’s called Canvas becomes it came from Cannabis. Indian hemp was used for medicinal tinctures before 1937.

Lewis should be ashamed of pimping his daughter in his jihad against Medical Marijuana. Her testimony was disgustingly coached.

Pleeeese people remember “it’s for the children”
How many Mormons are there in the Montana House and Senate? How many are running? Anyone know?

  18. Grandma Jeanie

No matter what the religion, who wants a Representative that only cares about one issue. We need a representative who cares about a wide variety of important issues, just like the people in the district do. I guarantee you that there is a very, very small number of people in this district that think banning medical marijuana is a top priority.

I remember back in 2000 when Duke Doonsbury was running for president under his banner of “compassionate facism”, see we need to bring back compassionate facism. Ideas like closing down public schools, cause we need to make sure somebody is home to get the UPS packages. This is why Im moving to Yellowstone county to vote for Dave the guy with out hair Lewis. Cause we need compassionate facism in our legislature. We need to be free from our freedoms, cause all these choices will give a person a headach. And after all we need to watch a few people suffer and die, without their medicine of choice. That is why Im voting for my favorite facist Dave no hair Lewis.
