DNC Preview: Schweitzer, Juneau Will Take Podium
The big fiesta gets underway in Charlotte tonight (as opposed to the big siesta, the snooze in Tampa last week, and today there is news that Montana’s own Brian Schweitzer has been invited to address the convention. The date and time are not yet public.
Montana’s Denise Juneau will also be speaking, on Wednesday night 5pm Mountain Time. Convention speeches can be watched live here.
Schweitzer turned in a big performance at the 2008 convention, taking some hard swipes at John McCain to the delight of the crowd. So perhaps his speech will be televised this time around. It had been an open question, until now, as to whether the Obama White House would invite Schweitzer to speak. Schweitzer and Obama do not see eye to eye on everything, such as healthcare, a topic on which Schweitzer has staked out a more progressive position than the president (universal coverage, Canada-style). And Schweitzer is also, as we know, a pro-gun, pro-coal guy. Also, Schweitzer’s favorite topic nowadays is fiscal management. He likes to brag about his budget surpluses and rub the Republicans’ noses in it. In national politics today, such talk comes mostly from Republicans (even though it shouldn’t), and Obama is being blamed by the GOP (unfairly) for the national debt.
But Obama must have a victory in a Western state, Colorado, in order to stay president. And Schweitzer is popular among the progressive set, especially the netroots crew. So it makes sense that this invitation has issued. Beyond that, Schweitzer deserves the speaking slot (assuming he even wants it) simply for what he has accomplished here in Montana, wrangling a bunch of stupid Tea Party cows, and branding their asses, and their stupid ideas, with a VETO.

GO BRIAN! DON’T HOLD BACK! LET’EM HAVE IT WITH BOTH BARRELS! Put it in terms that even the TEATARDS can understand! I know you will and I know that you can, ’cause nobody does it better than you! No one cuts through the bullshit better than you do, and THAT is what the country needs right now!
Let us know when you’re gonna speak. I wanna WATCH that one for sure!
p.s. Watched the whole thing tonight. Wow! Some great speakers. And just LOOK at that audience! It AIN’T just angry old racist white dudes and fat ol’ white broads in hats with tea bags hangin’ off. IT’S AMERICA! BIG contrast.
He’s popular for, if nothing else, rubbing the GOP’s nose in any defeat they suffer. He’s not afraid to tell them to bleep off.
Schweitzers speech in 2008 was among the best at the event and will likely be again this year. His will be the only speech I watch–and is probably the only Montana speech that will be televised.
Nice Teddy Kennedy Clip.
I was sitting there watching and came to this conclusion.
Ted must of been a Navy Seal in the “War on Women”.
Ingy, quit drinking so much!
http://2012.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/09/ghost-of-ted-kennedy-haunts-mitt-romney-at-dnc-video.php?ref=fpa
Stay right there Lynn.
Old Teddy’s going for help.
What the Democrats must NOT do at their convention is focus on simply answering the Republican critisms of the party. What the MUST do is lay out a specific plan for the next four years. If they do that, they are likely to do much better in November. Up to this point, they have failed to accomplish this – in fact, they have allowed the Republicans to set both the pace and the tone of this entire election. One of the things I love about Tester is that he has primarily laughed off the Republican partisan crap being flung at him and stayed on message. If President Obama does the same, he will not only help himself, he will help out the down ticket Democrats.
As far as watching the convention, I am not all that interested other than to see what Schweitzer has to say.
I watched a little of the convention last night, but Luke Kenneth I think Schweitzers speech will be the best part!
The above should read “like Kenneth”. Oops
Schweitzer speaking should liven things up a bit and give convention goers something to look forward to! When will he announce when he is speaking?
Good speakers last night, loved Michelle’s, she hit it out of the park, saw our good Gov. on PBS, he’s using the same stump speech at the convention that he uses here in Montana, barg, brag, brag all about how HE has got this state going in the right direction and of course never once mentioning that the GOP controlled legislature held his feet to the fire to get us here. He’s trolling for ‘something’ but I don’t think Messina and the big boys are too interested, he’s a lean, mean, talkin’ machine but I’m afraid the ‘choir’ has heard it all before. Let’s hope the speeches tonight are as well scripted as last night and they leave Montana’s mouthpiece back in the hotel room to watch like the rest of us will be doing!
You’re RIGHT, aware! The speeches were awesome! Now, compare them to the Pubbie speeches! Well, there is NO comparison. The Pubs are reetards. BTW, what’s Mitten’s slogan, a car elevator in every garage?
Speaking of ‘trolls’ it looks like three or four wingers have been assigned to troll this blog full time now.
Yes but they’re worse than useless. THEY’RE PATHETIC! I welcome them! We can soon open a mincemeat factory with their remains!
p.s. They really are good humor fodder.
p.s. Ever seen a closeup of the human anus? Well, have a look! You’ll never see one in more detail than this!
http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/09/05/robertson-democrats-are-going-after-god/
Yes, friends, the Demoncrats are the party of gays, godlessness, and UNIONS!
Yes but, we all know that Pat and the Pubbies are the party of rectumtude! Or something like that. Is that the right word? Rectumtude? I can’t remember. Sorry to all my Pubbie pals!
bwhhaahahahahahahahahhaaa!
Yes, friends, moral rectumtude. It’s what made this country great! Yah just can’t beat that? Right, God???
While I would agree with your colorful assessment on some of them, Larry, it would appear that at least one is attempting to have a reasoned debate. In this political arena characterized by willful stupidity, name calling, outright lies and misdirection, his reasoned posts – while often incorrect – stand out. Even Tim Baldwin is attempting to engage here in a reasoned manner. Not all Republicans are “Earth Haters”, afraid of gays/non-christians, or evil. In fact, there are plenty of Republicans that take reasoned stances that make a lot of sense. In the same vein, not all Democrats are above racism, bigotry or homophobia. It betters the discussion on the various issues we are faced with when we listen to the opposing side – even when disagree with them. It sharpens our arguments and can result in better legislation.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/09/04/1127663/-Ten-True-Facts-Guaranteed-to-Short-Circuit-Republican-Brains
Regarding the speech by the HHS Secretary, since when have “Kansas values” included having your son mentored by Frank Marshall Davis? Auntie Em would not have done that!
Schweitzer is a great addition to the event because he is great at telling the story of everything democrats in Montana have to be proud of! Five statewide democratic elected officials in a red state, plus Jon Tester in the US senate is no small accomplishment. Glad we have a dem who is such a popular figure nationally!
The results of the 2010 statewide election refute your assertions, Lisa.
Rick, now you are just being silly. The 2010 elections have nothing to do with what Lisa posted. We DO have five statewide Democratic elected officials and Jon Tester is our Senator. Moreover Schweitzer enjoys an approval rating most elected officials could only hope to have.
Yes, in 2010, the Republicans had a very good year. That has nothing to do with who is currently sitting in State administrative offices. Moreover, the Dems are likely to keep most of that dynamic this year. Bullock/Walsh are likely to win the Governor’s office. Juneau is likely to remain in her position. Monica Lindeen is certain to keep her spot (I mean really.. is Skees the best the Republicans could field? – not that I would support anyone other than Lindeen for that office).. the list goes on. In fact, the only office that I see a possibility of changing to Republican is the Attorney General’s office and even then, I think Bucy is going to eek out a slim victory over Fox.
http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2012/09/05/weather-pushes-obama-acceptance-speech-to-smaller-indoor-venue
Given the Eastwood skit, it probably wouldn’t look good for President Obama to have alot of empty seats. 73,000 seat venue to a 15,000 seat venue for his acceptance speech.
Rick, you do know that most of the pundits are agreed that the Eastwood rambling skit backfired, right? In fact, Romney apparently felt the same way as he didn’t include Eastwood in his campaign wrapup video. Whether Obama speaks to 73,000 or 15,000, his words will be carried into the livingrooms of every home in America.
Kenneth, your reasoned and well thought out posts are appreciated. The DNC has already cut this convention from 4 days to 3 days. The first day at the NASCAR track got cancelled months ago. The unions don’t like the fact that it is being held in a right to work state. President Obama is losing the women vote according to polls out today despite 10s of millions of dollars spent since the phony “Republican war on women” was started.
The Obama/Biden campaign thought they still had the blind following of supporters and the masses. This is why they thought that they could fill the stadium like they did in Denver 4 years ago. That is why this change has significance.
The masses?? The masses? MeTHINKS it should be MITTENS who’s worried about the “masses”. For you see, in recent memory I can think of NO dude runnin’ for prez that got ZERO percent in a poll of black voters. Just what “masses” is Mittens representing??
The masses of folks who have car elevators? bhwhahahahahaa!
Love it. Do stick around, ricky. I need a foil for my humor, and your tinfoil hat is PERFECT!
rick, aren’t MY posts thoughtful and well-reasoned too? I do try you know.
Here, ricky, here’s a headline I came up with for your rightwing nutjob sites.
DEMS GIVE PARTY A GODECTOMY!
bwhahahahahahahahahaaaa!
Feel free to use it. Godectomy. Get it?
http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-pn-dnc-platform-god-jerusalem-20120905,0,558903.story
It was ridiculous that they removed God and denied that Jerusalem was the capitol of Israel in the first place!
What say you, Mr. Larry–Ranger?!
That you’re an asshole. Christofascism has been outed for what it is. Now, it’s only a matter of time before organized religious nazis are relegated to the extreme fringes of society. I mean, let me ask YOU! WHEN was the last time a major political party called OUT your little christofascist assholes for what you are? Huh? Huh? Huh?
Jesus plus nothing equals NOTHING, cupcake. And folks can’t live on nothing! That’s all you have to offer! I know you reetards better than you know yourselves.
http://www.harpers.org/archive/2003/03/0079525
Belief in God is not Christofascism, you psycho … but keep up the profanity and the abuse, your on your way to getting banned from this site just like all the others you’re banned from.
BTW the fascists that your so fond of associating with people, were … wait for it …. SOCIALISTS, just like you; not capitalists or Repulicans … have a nice day.
also, they should never have taken God or Jerusalem out of the platform.
Belief in god is superstition: a remnant of discovering fossils then injected into scripture by primitives.
Protoceratops was the griffin of mythology and Quetzalcoatlus, a dragon.
I guess that you’re an atheist … you’re welcome to that belief (lack of) system … thanks for sharing.
I hope that you’ll offer the same freedom to the Democrats that wanted God put back into the platform.
I, for the record, am NOT an atheist! But I’m also NOT an ignernt, inbred, peckerwooded, reetarded Southern BATSHIT!
I honor the Creator and His creation, reGARDLESS of what people call Him!
Allah, God, Jehovah, Yaweh, Buddha, Creator. Makes no difference at all to me.
But you see, above ALL, I honor His/Her creation, and thank Him/Her with all my heart for giving us such a wonderful, grace-filled, sacred place to live! The Earth is a holy place. The Earth is a holy place. The Earth is our GIFT from the Creator. We do NOT have the right to SHIT on it!
You see, dipshit, unlike you, the Earth is enuff for me! The question I must ask you inbred loser christofascists is, was this not enough??
There are a number of misconceptions as well as some outright inaccuracies in your reply…
Please link any poll that actually shows that President Obama trails Romney with women. I have yet to see one that doesn’t give President Obama at least a 14 point lead over Romney. I would be interested if you have counter information.
Second, the so called “War on Women” is not phony. It may be overplayed but it has solid legal and social basis. In fact, much of that basis can be found in the Republican Party Platform, voted on and approved at the Convention. You are welcome to believe that the “War on Women” is phony, but it would paint you as both willfully ignorant and uninformed. I don’t picture you as being either so I am curious why you said that…
Niether party’s convension was as well attended as the heads of those parties would have liked. I draw no conclusions from that save that A) many candidates are prefering to stay at home and campaign rather than attend and B) the general public at large is either too money strapped or to disenfranchised to attend. I am curious what your reasoning is to believe that Democrats (or Republicans) stayed home rather than attend.
One of many examples –

WARNING: While there is no nudity or hard language in this video, it may still be NSFW due to content.
Kenneth, don’t you know that nazis are not funny people? They are very, very serious…..seriously REETARDED!
bwahahahahahahaahahhahahaaaa!
todd akin, a very, very funny man withOUT trying to be!
Todd Akin has been almost completely minimized by this statement but the video should also remind us that VP candidate Ryan and 171 other Republican Representatives also co-sponsored and supported the bill discussed in the video. This is just one example of the ignorant and blatently stupid ways that the Republicans – as a party – have declared “War on Women”. I personally find it disgusting and it will color my vote when I am in the booth in November.
It’s not just NSFW, Kenneth, it’s also triggering and likely needs that disclaimer.
I found it very funny and apropos. I was going to post it at Not Pillage a couple of days ago, but didn’t feel like going through the effort of reminding people that the Internet is a dangerous place.
As requested, Kenneth. Can we agree that CBS is not a conservative leaning organization?
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-57506185-503544/poll-romney-favorability-up-slightly/
Thanks, I don’t think of you as ignorant and ill informed either. Simply put, women are not single issue voters. They vote for less regulations and lower taxes so that they can keep more of their total household income.
Regulations??? Women are concerned about regulations? Really? Well, I consider YOU to be an idiot, ricky.
BTW, ricky, the top one percent OWNS ninety-nine percent of the wealth in this country. How do you square that with your GOD, dumbass? What would Jesus say? What would Jesus do? Vote Pubbie??
bwhahahahahahahahahahhaaaa!
Yeah, some big christian boy YOU really are, ricky. What the hell kinda god do you worship, dude, that believes such greed, corruption, inquality, suffering, unfairness is GOOD?
Methinks that you are one confused little follower of Aynus Rant!
Were you dropped on your head whilst a child, Larry–Ranger? Perhaps you suffer from Tourette’s Syndrome?
Americans recognize that rights come from God not government. Capitalism has lifted more people out of poverty than any other system in world history.
(Ayn wasn’t a God fan, Larry–Ranger. Your comments will carry more weight if they are well researched, less hostile and cogent.)
“Americans recognize that rights come from God not government. Capitalism has lifted more people out of poverty than any other system in world history.”
I would challenge you to back up either of those two statements as I believe both to be complete bullshit. Most Americans (assuming they know anything about American Government) believe their rights are guarenteed by the Constitution. They make that statement constantly and with great vigor. Moreover, this appears to be a belief held by both Republicans and Democrats judging by the frequency that both say it.
I do not accept that Capitalism has a causal relationship with either poverty or freedom and I challenge you to prove it.
Kenneth, you asking a lot of a fifteen year old. It borders on child abuse!
This little fella really is a hoot. I’m thinkin’ that he must be one of the Bulbdim followers who happened upon this site.
You see, Kenneth, the truly great thing about being a moronic fundiwackmentalistis NOT that you’re born again, but that you were born YESTERDAY!
Perhaps you recall Deitrich Bonhoeffer when he said that “redemption is cheap grace”. Well, fundies are a cheap date! All the corpos gotta do is yell JAYSUS, and then slip’em the Big Kockh! They think they’re in HEAVEN!
Blessed are the truly dumbassed for they shall recieve the Big Kockh!
This is who fundie boy lil’ ricky is! Dumber than dog shit, but by GOD he’s got hisself JAYSUS!
PuhRAZE Vitory!
Lil’ Ricky is sufferin’ from moral rectumtude BIG time!
bwhahahahhhhahaha!
Thank you for showing up here, richy, for I was running out of material.
LK is right: christofascism is a construct just as god its. Rights come from god as spark plugs come from Pep Boys: we built it and pay for it.
God sent us a gift.

BWHAAHHAAHAHHAAAAA!
Not sure what Jesus would say but I don’t think you, Larry, should speak on the subject … since you’re openly hostile to any religion or mention of religion.
Are you suggesting that Christians are not suppossed to be wealthy and/or if they do succeed, and achieve wealth, they are suppossed to give it all to idiot high school drop-outs? … because it’s a part of their religion? … [I'm replacing your terms greed-coruption-inequality with wealthy] … I don’t think you should be speaking on behalf of the Christians (see above).
jesus is a construct created by those who would bring Rome to its knees: it is no more real than a Griffin is.
LOOK, dipshit, I was RAISED as strict a christian as any of YOU morons out there! Wanna play Bible quotes?
And YOUR bullshit, cheap-ass, two-bit, inbred religion is as GOOFY as it comes!
I may criticize the Holy Roman Kiddy Diddlers mercyilessly, but by GOD they did a lot of actual GOOD in this country!
They built HOSPITALS, SCHOOLS, UNIVERSITIES, and they tried to HELP people! What has YOUR bullshit Southern Batshit crazy-assed, peckerwooded, racist, inbred, ignernt “religion” DONE for the people of this country?!
Nuthin’ I’d say, exCEPT to perPETuate racism and hatred and IGNORANCE!
The Catholics EDUCATED half the damn country! I know MANY poor kids who became nurses, doctors, etc. with the help of the church! And say what you will about the Bishops porkin’ little boys, MANY Catholics did MUCH good for this country!
What have YOU done, little fella? Handled some snakes? Handled YOUR snake?? Drank some poison? Hung a few n*ggers? What? What? WHAT?
I await your response.
Oh, BTW, I actually DO spend a good deal of time listening to your hate radio, AFR talk. Evil shit, dude, WAY more evil than what the Catholics did!
First, it wasn’t CBS that commisioned the poll, it was ABC. Second, it isn’t the reporting of the poll that concerns me (though individual reports can and do have biases) but rather the polling company that concerns me. Langer Research is a relatively unknown to me so I will have to do some more research on them. Based on the methodology, though, I do not have a lot of faith in the poll. Moreover, the summation of the poll itself made by langer is rambling and almost incoherent.
All that said, I would point out that even the Langer poll indicated that Romney trails Obama with women. The spread may be smaller right now, but it is still a significant spread. Moreover, the other polls taken by more well known pollsters using a much larger sampling base still have Obama leading Romney with women by over 10 points.
Your last statement is a non-sequetor. I never claimed that women were primarily single issue voters and I would posit that your statement is equally incorrect. Each voter is different and as a group, they will vote for different issues (or a combination of different issues). What I did say – and still strongly believe is that the perceived “War on Women” (based on actual legal and social grounds) will continue to hurt the Republican party with women voters.
I would point out that you haven’t disagreed with my statement that the “War on Women” has legal and social basis. Does that mean that you recognise that fact?
“A lot” are TWO words, Ricky. Folks who mistake that are NOT very well educated! What was your highest grade level achieved again? You are a lightweight posing as something you’re not. You are NOT capable of holding your own here, and it shows.
Dang-it, Larry, I be sorry about dat. Seems them gubmit skools ain’t so good no more.
By the way random capitalization and profanity don’t a good sentence make!
Diversions are most frequently used by people who can’t defend their opinions. Larry–Ranger this be you!
Not a diversion, dude. The FACT is that anyone who does not know that a lot is two seperate words is an intellectual lightweight. That’d be you. Again, what are your degrees in? Any? Any? Huh?? Huh?
And as far as public schools go, you get OUT of them what you put INTO them! You obviosly didn’t put much in.
So, in conclusion, you’ve got lightweight write LARGE all over you. You don’t impress much. But then, you’re probably the best the wingers can muster!
‘Rules for Radicals’ by Saul Alinsky page 128 of the chapter named Tactics. “…the fifth rule: Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon. It is almost impossible to counterattack ridicule. Also it infuriates the opposition, who then react to your advantage.
Alinsky would be very proud of you, Larry–Ranger! Once a person learns these tactics, however, they are no longer intimidated but amused!
“Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!” -Wizard of Oz and Larry–Ranger…
The earth hater party’s Alinsky guru is Newt Gingrich: he recently held court for his party’s most pliant apparatchiks to teach those pledges how to sling shit.
Alinsky would be proud of you too, Larry Kurtz!
Newt is an opportunist. He lost all credibility when he attacked the Ryan plan last spring on Meet the Press. His attempts at class warfare against Mittens in the campaign sealed his fate as a footnote to this campaign at best.
The Republican Party is at war with itself as a house divided: may it and you rot in Hell.
Interesting that you used the word Hell. Hell is a reality only for those who choose not to believe in God. Are you admitting to being a God fearing person, Larry Kurtz?
The DNC just removed all references to God in their platform. Apparently there were not yet enough votes to declare themselves Godless-communists!
Hell exists in the mind, not off-world like Willard believes it is: remember that Mormon heaven is polygamous. Buy now!
Tax evasion is illegal: tax avoidance merely immoral and unethical.
Come on, Rick. I know that you are just pulling Larry’s strings but I have a hard time believing that you think all Democrats are either godless or communists. That is just ignorant.
Kenneth, What is it they are progressing towards?!
“How do you tell a communist? Well, it’s someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an anti-Communist? It’s someone who understands Marx and Lenin.” -Ronald Reagan
Reagan was being pig-ignorant. As someone who studied Marx and Lenin and Georg Lucas (that’s pronounced Loocash) and Martin Buber and the Bible, I can tell you that Communism is something you have no fricking clue about. Neither did the Alzheimer In Chief. The early Christians were communists. St. Aquinas argued for communistic living among true Christian believers. You are using an appeal to false authority pretending you understand something you have no clue about. Neither did Ronald Reagan or his wife’s astrologer.
“What is it they are progressing towards”?
That is actually a good question. Please show me any plank of the Democratic Platform that is communism. Maybe I am dumb, but I just can’t find one.

the Newt lost credibility a long time ago – long before he attacked Ryan’s plan. He was never a serious contender of the Republican Nomination. Personally, my favorite “Newt Moment” was Moon Base Gingrich.
What you are calling “Class Warfare” against Mittens was not started by Newt and will continue to the election. It will hard for the average American to identify with a person that has never worked a real job in his life, was born with the perverbial silver spoon in his mouth and claims that he understands the working man. One of the goals of the Republican Convention was to attempt to counter that perception and, in some small ways, they were successful in doing it. As long as Romney doesn’t get stupid again and blatently point out his advantages growing up, this might not be as big a problem for him over the next 60 days.
Too late for the Mittens, Kenneth! He already done’er again!

HEY, I can relate to Mittens. I’ve got a twelve foot aluminum fishing boat, and Mittens has a boat too!
Agreed.

HUH? Say what? Never HEARD of the dude, dude! (see Ahold and the Miranda warning)
You see, ricky, where I come from, folks have ALWAYS made fun of pompous horse’s asses and little nazi wannabees! It’s just how we are! It’s kinda like Charlie Chaplan and the little dictator. Nazis and christofascists are INHERENTLY funny people! They ARE like assholes! THAT particular part of the human anatomy LENDS itself to jokes by being what it is! And so do YOU folks! You folks put the ANUS in the butt of jokes!
HEY, I didn’t invent humor, dude. It’s human nature! I mean, can you NOT see how funny Mittens and Queen Anne are, CLAIMING to be so poor while have a f*cking CAR ELEVATOR?? Geez, you’ve got NO sense of humor!
Or the human anus pat robertson claiming to speak for GOD??
I mean, ricky, THIS is damn funny stuff! I don’t make it up!

“Schweitzer, who turned 57 on Tuesday, says he plans to enjoy his free time fishing in the morning and drinking whiskey in the afternoon.”
You Democrats need more guys like Schweitzer.
True story: I went to look at some land to buy one time with a old crusty Montanan and all round great guy. We looked the land over, and talked about price, and haggled and ruminated a bit. The price was a little higher than originally planned.
The deal had yet to be struck for it was more land than I wanted. Finally, when a deal seemed iminent, he looked me right at me and he asked me a question with an inquisitive, wary look in his eys. It was kind of a hot day anyway, and he said, “Would you like a beer”?
Since I was done for the day and had nothing major planned, I replied, “Oh HELL yes”! And then we downed a couple’a cold ones, and boy were they good!
We concluded the deal right then and there, for I had passed his integrity test! And then, after we had finished, he said to me that “he didn’t trust a man that don’t drink beer.” And come to think about it, I don’t either!
So, yes, DfD, I too like the fact that Scwheitzer ain’t shy about knockin’ back a few. Hell, HE’S IRISH! And them boys ain’t no slackers when it comes to drinkin’, but they STILL need to go some to keep up with us bohunks!

http://atr.rollcall.com/democrats-like-their-chances-of-holding-the-senate/
The question both the Republicans and the Democrats should be asking themselves is “How can we reach and motivate the single largest group of voters in America”.
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2012/08/15/poll-likely-non-voters-more-likely-to-not-vote-for/
This block of voters is often forgotten – especially by those that do political polls and is often the reason that elections sometimes turn out MUCH different than the pre-election polls indicate. It is also the reason that many Republican Legislators want to limit same day or near same day registration given that this block of voters are usually more likely to support Democratic Candidates rather than Republican Candidates.
If the Democrats really want to win (and win big), they will have to convince this untapped group of votes that A) their vote matters and B) that the Democrats actually give a damn about what is important to THEM. Historically, the Dems have been better at it then the Republicans but don’t count the Republicans out. 2010 should have shown that, sometimes, the Republicans stumble on a way to motivate even the unmotivated.
Too many people treat 2010 as if it were an anomaly. It was actually pretty well the norm, for a midterm. 2002 was an anomaly, because of the Sept. 11th 2001 attacks (NEVAR FORGIT!) Midterms frequently go against the incumbent party. As anti-incumbent sweeps go, 2010 had little on 1994.
History has little predictive power, given that Citizens United has changed a whole big bunch of rules. Never before has the media propaganda wing of the Republicant party (FAUX News) had such sway to lie. Never before has racial polemic been as effective. Saying what the Democrats “will have to do” disregards that the may not have any power to do so. Chinless Mitch said rather blatantly that the entire Republicant agenda is geared towards defeating Obama. That’s reprehensible, and should be horrifying to any American patriot. But still, the Rethugs have obstructed any progress and many people refuse to hold them accountable for it. What isn’t disheartening about that, when evil anti-American assholes can act with impunity?
The Republican strategy for 2012 hasn’t been to ‘motivate their voters’ at all. They know they can rely on the angry and clueless. Their strategy has been and remains to dis-enfranchise, either through emotion of statute, as many people as possible. A Democratic co-worker of mine waxed lyrical about how cool it would be if we all just didn’t vote. That would send a message to the Government, alrighty! Yes, it would send a message, that message being that Republicants only have to motivate one more person than they can demotivate on the side of Democrats.
Put simply, any demand that ‘the Democrats have to’ in the face of the rather clear Republicant strategy is demanding that the good overwhelmingly triumph over evil with no will from the public to do so, when the evil has shown time and again they can destroy faster than the good can build. So you might as well stay home, or vote for the evil, right? How ’bout this. Let’s get rid of the evil, and then see what we can build without those who wish to destroy it? How about we do that?
While I agree, in general with what you said about the midterm election in 2010, it doesn’t take into account the level of change the Republicans were able to swing with the Tea Party. Yes, historically, Midterms usually go against the party in power. Rarely do they go against them in the numbers seen in 2010.
I also completely agree with you on the current Republican mantra of “no Obama in 2012″. In fact, I don’t know a better word for it than I have already used in relation to Mitch’s words – TRAITOR. That said, they have been very effective disenfranchising both Democrats and the moderates from both parties. The poll I posted graphically demostrates that. I refuse to believe that it is impossible to motivate those people to vote. Maybe that is simplistic of me, but didn’t the Tea party accomplish that very thing two years ago?
I stand behind my statement that the Democrats “have to” motivate the unmotivated. Yes, they are facing a concerned effort by the Republicans to disenfranchise the voters but that is even more reason to work to motivate them. I guess I don’t see it in terms of “good” and “evil” – more in terms of progress and regression. It is the regression of the current Republican Party that convinced me to start voting Democrat after over 20 years of voting primarily Republican.
Getting rid of the “evil” (regressive idiots like Mitch) is simple enough if you can motivate the unmotivated to work in their own interests. In fact, it is currently the Republican Party that has the hard job – convincing people to vote against their own interests. Surprisingly (at least to me) they have proven pretty good at it.
Yes, the Citizen United decision will certainly effect this election, though I think it will effect the downticket races more than the Presidencial race. Once again, though, this counterpoints the “need” to address the 40%+ of Americans that have simply folded their cards and walked away from the table.

Wow.. just wow. It was obvious that Romney had no clue the guy sitting across the table was the spouse of the guy asking the questions. What a moron.
Does anyone know how to locate from archives the Nancy Keenan speech? I missed it.

Is it Billy Bob or Billy Boob? Of Billy the Boob? Jus wondering.
Clearly Ellie Hill, from Missoula, was the break-out star at this convention. She was all over TV. She is a rising star.

WTFaaaaaa??? Hell, he ain’t even BLACK! Maybe you’ve heard of the mythical black welfare mom. Well, I present to you the REAL welfare MORMON! A “Mexican refugee”!
bwhhahaahahahhahahahahahahahaaa! Too funny.
Poor widdle Mittens has some ‘splainin’ to do!
http://crooksandliars.com/susie-madrak/aid-was-good-enough-mitts-dad-not-hun
Seriously, are you schizophrenic? We’re talking about his speach … and you say “he aint even black” … what does that have to do with anything … and what’s this about the millions of mythical black welfare moms? …
Anyway, let’s say that his dad used welfare … does it mean that Romney has to criple the country with entitlements, if his dad used welfare 70 years ago … and I’ll bet that his dad would have encouraged a work-your-way-off-welfare program.
Nobody is saying that welfare is to be eliminated entirely … he’s is saying that they need to be controlled more tightly, reinstitute work-off-welfare, reduce the amount entitlements … except of course Obamacare catastrophy, which needs to be repealed.
What??? You mean that WHITE people get welfare too??
BWAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAAAA!
Gee, I’m larnin’ SO much from you!
The right wing is so steeped in lies anymore that discussion with them, people like you, D, is nearly impossible. Way too much time is spent trying to educate them to actually get anything accomplished. Here’s a bit of learnin’ for you, D.
Welfare Queens/moms was a racist dog-whistle used by Ronald Reagan to convince people that black women were squirting out babies so that they could buy Cadillacs on the government dime. It was a lie then, and a lie now. The lie has cbeen restructured for younger folks like yourself to be …
“Entitlements” is a rightwing word used to scare those who work hard about those who don’t. It’s no different than Reagan’s lie, just more easy for you to believe. The majority of Americans receiving government aid actually have jobs, just not ones that pay enough to cover the bills. True “entitlements” are things like the mortgage deduction, the deduction for dependants, business development tax credits and farm subsidies. Try to take those away and see how loudly the Republicants scream to keep their welfare.
There is no discussing Obamacare with you. You’ve swallowed the lies hook, line and sinker. It will save the country money, but you just think it’s a ‘catastrophe’ because some wingnut told you so. There is one other lie you’ve bought into I can and will educate you about. Mitt Romney will not, and can not, repeal Obamacare, the ACA. He’s lying to you and you desperately want to believe him. That would take an act of Congress to perform, and they’ll never do it. It sounds real appealing to the wingnut mindset when discussed on the campaign stump. But it will become politically toxic if the ACA is ever actually repealed, and the consequences of that become clear. That’s why the House has wasted your money and time voting to repeal it 33 times. Because they know they can play with your head without ever facing consequence for actually accomplishing that goal. Mittens will never repeal national Romneycare. (That hardly matters, Mittens won’t bet elected. But even if the Senate goes full on Wongnut, Obama will never sign a repeal. Obamacare is here to stay.)
Wow. Well, thank you for taking the time to educate me on your propoganda.
“Squirting out babies” ugghh … nice imagery though.
Mythical welfare moms. It wasn’t what we were talking about. … but anyway, let’s talk about it. I don’t think that they are my imagination … but I also wouldn’t say that anybody suspects that welfare moms who continue to have kids when they can’t support themselves are buying Cadillacs. This issue for me isn’t that welfare mom live better than me, it’s that some people who depend on government assistance make bad choices, having more kids, requiring more assistance and claiming a kind of rite to have kids. I’d prefer a system that disuades welfare recipients from having more kids than they can afford. I have professional friends with stable incomes that consciously had one child so that the financial burden wouldn’t be too great … if these people don’t have the brains to make those choices the system should be set up to discourage behavior.
Is it possible to say that I like some entitlements and not others, if I accept your definitions. I like tax cuts and deductions (not really fond of the farm subsidies but …). I don’t like free healthcare, welfare, housing bailouts, etc. … but if I had to choose I’d give up all of my “entitlements”, if all of the other hand-outs are eliminated … it’s more than just the country is going bankrupt, it’s about breaking the cycle of dependency and what I call ‘downward competition’.
You claiming that Obamacare is going to save the country money is insane … and if anybody has been drinking the Koolaid, it you. There is no way that putting however many millions of people onto a free government run healthcare system is going to save money … and frankly it irresponsible for you to even suggest it. We are definitely not going to see eye-to-eye on this, but I hope that you’ll get some perspective and realize that the best you could hope for is that Obamacare is going to be a crazy expensive program that is going to make a lot of Democrats feel good about making a lot of lower class people’s lives easier … at the expense of our kids, who will be paying for the debt.
I hope that Romney repeals Obamacare as fast as possible when he gets elected. It’s important to get that done before people start using the entitlement program, and then insist that it’s their “rite”. Obamacare is a nightmare, and I’ll be celebrating in the streets when it’s torn down.
You really should read up on the ACA (Obamacares, if you will). No one is going to receive “free healthcare”. The provisions in the ACA apply to those with private insurance policies. And much of the to-do about the ACA has to do with the “penalty/tax” associated with those who don’t/won’t purchase private health insurance. Plus the ACA establishes exchanges where private health insurance companies will compete for folks private dollars when purchasing health insurance.
Yes, there are provisions that require everyone to purchase private health insurance coverage (another bone of contention for many). And there are some provisions for those that are too poor to purchase insurance where the gov’t will provide some subsidies to assist them in buying private health insurance policies. While the ACA is a federal land and requires compliance, it’s otherwise a private insurance plan. Private insurance companies should get rich, richer, richest as a result.
There is so much fail in your reply “D”, I hardly even know where to start. Understand that I do NOT like the ACA for reasons I have made abundantly clear ever since it was passed. The only saving grace of the ACA, in my opinion, is that it included some things that did need to be done, like preventing insurance agencies from dropping you if you get sick. I keep getting told that the ACA was a starting point for a better system and I am attempting to be patient waiting for the better system to materialize but as long as wingnuts like you wail misrepresentations and outright lies taught to you by Faux news, there is little hope that a better system will actually be passed.
I am sceptical that the ACA will actually save money but not for the reasons you list. I am concerned that the ACA punted on what I see as the most important issue with American Health Care – the actual cost of that care. It remains to be seen if the ACA will actually address it but as it stands now, the actual cost of health care continues to rise at the inflated rate it has been rising for the last decade. Unless something changes soon, even the good parts of the ACA will get lost in the financially unsound cost of health care.
I think with someone as misinformed (or uninformed) as D is, you have to be a bit more direct, Dallas.
D, we were talking about Welfare queens/moms as directly part of your ridiculous claims concerning “entitlements”. Don’t weasel away now; it’s just starting to get good.
“Squirting out babies” was a term quoted directly from Conrad Burns. Glad you like it. “Buying Cadillacs and large televisions” with welfare dollars was a direct claim of Ronald Reagan, and I’m thankful you come close to admitting how a big a lie it was. That’s the same lie you support every time you use the term “entitlements”. What that term actually means is that people are using money in ways you don’t like and you feel “entitled” to tell them how they should spend it. Here’s a hint, you’re not, any more than Michelle Malkin was entitled to break the law by peeping in ACA supporters windows to find out what kind of counter-tops they had.
True entitlements are things like the marriage deduction. (Remember all your Republicant buddies screaming a fit about how Clinton passed a marriage penalty tax? No he didn’t. He tried to make it so that each and every person paid under the same tax table as their own income warranted, but your tax hating pals couldn’t give up a sexist and unreasonable entitlement, could they?) True entitlements are things like the mortgage interest deduction. Why the hell should I have to subsidize you getting a tax break because you borrowed money to buy a house? What possible sense does it make for you to say you don’t like “farm subsidies”? You are fond of all the other entitlements rich people get. I think you’re a bit inconsistent there. Finally, and this is the real point, what makes you think you have any say whatsoever in how the benefits of such government largesse are spent by those who receive them? You are more than willing to talk bullshit about how welfare recipients make “bad choices”. Is it a good choice for those who receive large tax refunds to buy an four-wheeler built in China? You seem to think you have some moral say over that. I don’t think you do. And I know you to be hypocritical about how you apply your pseudo-moral standards.
The long and short of it is this. You would prefer to eliminate ‘all’ tax deductions but you vehemently refuse to support the folks who’ve tried to eliminate even some of them, because you are terrified that welfare queens might take advantage of you. You are the kind of person who would ask the shortest person in the room to reach the highest shelf, because they are the least valued, and are intimidated by the tallest people. If everybody in the room needs what’s on the top shelf, you’ll still ask the shortest person to reach it, out of fear. You won’t ask those tall folk to do what they easily could, but instead worry that you might end up less valued than someone shorter than you. There isn’t a matter of “hand outs”, except to your fear. That is a denial that we’re all in this together.
Pig-fucking-ignorant. We’re not going to see eye-to-eye on it because you’re looking at a fantasy. I’m looking at the reality. The ACA will save the country money. Follow the links in that article and actually inform yourself, before telling me that I’m drinking Kool-Aid. If I’m drinking a sugary and tasty grape beverage, you’re drinking Drano. (Do you even know where the term “drinking Kool-aid” comes from, or are you ignorant of that as well?)
You have completely ignored the fact that RMoney can’t repeal Obamacare. You have completely ignored the fact that your precious Republicants won’t repeal Obamacare because it would be politically toxic to their careers. But when you think the ACA will be repealed, I won’t be their as you get arrested for ‘Disorderly Conduct’ while drunkenly dancing in the streets. I will help pay for the defense you can’t afford. After all, you are “entitled” to that.
As Rob says, there’s ignorant, and then there’s PIG f*cking ignorant! See below. How DOES one compromise with pig porkin’ stoopid?

Is your name D because its the only word you don’t misspell? Try spellcheck.
Apologies. My browser doesn’t have spell check … I’ll try harder.
Exactly … I felt the same.
Jennifer Rubin is nothing more than a right wing attack dog, well known for writing anti-women polemics under the guess of Conservative feminism (as if such a thing even exists). Just because the Washington Post gives her inches doesn’t make her an authority, nor does looking for published agreement lend weight to your partisan opinion. You’ll have to try harder than that, Craig.
Nailed it? I thought he nipped at the whiskey bottle a little too much before that speech.
What on earth does “that dog don’t hunt” mean, coming from a guy who owns a border collie?
I thought former Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm, who preceeded Schweitzer, was a lot better.
Favorite line:

….when you step into that booth and look at that ballot…..
….”D” means “Drive Forward” and “R” means “Reverse”!”
Try telling that to Greg Barkus.
