Documents: Hill Was in Business with Marijuana Grower

A fascinating item was brought to my attention this week.

It seems that Rick Hill, GOP candidate for Governor, was a business partner with Tom Daubert in some sort of venture.  Daubert is the medical marijuana provider who recently pled guilty to federal charges.

And it gets better. The company that Hill and Daubert founded was called….ready?   “Mature Leisure.”  Bwahahahahaaaaa!

I know this all sounds bizarre, but I’m not making it up.   Posted here are Mature Leisure, Inc.’s articles of incorporation, which were filed with the Secretary of State back in the day, and have now been sent to me by a sharp tipster who gets kudos.

Daubert, by the way, is the subject of the excellent new movie entitled “Code of the West” which details the unnecessary prosecution of Daubert and the heavy-handed law enforcement tactics brought into Montana by the U.S. Justice Department.

Daubert worked hard to lobby for the sick, and has paid for it with a suspended jail sentence thanks to a bunch of federal prosecutors who never got laid in college, weren’t cool enough to smoke pot, and so are permanently angry about it.

The question now  is, why was Rick Hill in business with Daubert?

Mature Leisure.  Hmmm.  That has a certain ring to it, like maybe pot or porn.  Was Rick Hill a pot smoker or pot grower, or perhaps a porn peddler?  Is there some other form of “mature leisure” that he indulges in, or attempted to sell to the masses?  Perhaps a swingers’ club or an S&M lounge?

Or is there a perfectly reasonable and mundane explanation for this business venture, as I would suspect there ought to be?  Hard to imagine they would have registered a marijuana growing company with the State of Montana in the 1990s.

But what about the mere fact that Hill was once associating closely with somebody whom he now believes (you can be sure) to be a criminal of the first order?  What does Hill have to say about that?  For that matter, what do Jeff Essmann and the other anti-cannabis crusaders think?  I’m sure Montanafesto will want to weigh in here.

Finally, perhaps a more salient point for purposes of this important election:  The company appears to have been capitalized with a significant investment, but went belly-up.  Add this to Rick Hill’s portfolio of other questionable enterprises, including losing his money (and that of his investors) in a ponzi scheme.

  1. The Gazette is reporting that MTGOP just gave Hill $500K: is he broke, too?

BULLshit! What a load of shit! And lil’ Ricky’s right in the MIDDLE of it again!|topnews|text|Frontpage

    • Hill will likely be in trouble over the donation as will Fox. Sadly, they probably won’t be in trouble for them until after the election. As misdemeaners, the penalties will probably not remove them from office, though. Montana Voters, we have been screwed by the very people that want our vote.

I did not vote for either Hill or Fox but if those donations are not returned, I would definitely support a recall of either candidate. Committing a misdemeaner crime is within the narrow boundries that Judge Tucker left open for a recall cause in his decision.

  3. There was a third partner in Mature Leisure according to the incorporation documents, someone named Larry V. Akey.

  4. This is actually something I know nothing about. I’m going to do a bit of research though, I will get back to you on this. Mature Leisure. That just sounds really sleazy. I hope it involved mermaids.

  5. It sounds like Mermaids with hookah’s making porn movies. Or fat old men lying on floating rafts served heart attack burgers by topless mermaids.

  6. Of course it could be that Mature Leisure, Inc was a venture aimed at marketing golf/resort/vacation packages in Montana to retirees in the southwest….

    • And of course it could be that doesn’t actually matter much. The innuendo is titillating, but the meat of the issue is that Rick Hill, once again, failed in the very ‘business savvy’ that he is using to promote his campaign for governor.

      • With a name like Mature Leisure, how could the business possibly have gone wrong. Now we know why Rick Hill was Martz’s economic development advisor.

  7. The head honcho of M L is apparently Larry Vance Akey. Larry V. Akey, apparently a current Congressional staffer after being a resident of East Helena. Mylife says:

    Places Lived:
    Woodbridge, VA
    East Helena, MT
    Alexandria, VA

Larry V Akey was born in 1952. Larry currently lives in Woodbridge, Virginia. Before that, Larry lived in East Helena, MT from 1987 to 1992. Before that, Larry lived in Woodbridge, VA from 2006 to 2006.
Larry V Akey is related to Susan Akey, who is 58 years old and lives in Woodbridge, VA.
There’s a COngressional staffer named Larry V Akey. at least in 2010-11. And the Leg Storm site has Akey as communications for Conrad Burns at pretty good rate of pay. No real surprise there.
But this is 1992 or something. Hill wasn’t even in politics then, and guess what, people change in 20 years.

So, before you scandalmonger, maybe you should ask Daubert, Hill, or Akey what the business attempted to do. Mature Leisure might be shuffleboard for all we know.

    • Well, if Craig Moore were around I’m certain he’d tell us we don’t have the right to ask those questions, or for that matter even discuss it. Being that it’s “20 years” ago that this happened, and some ‘other guy’ had control, you’re kinda saying the same thing. You’re wrong.

The ‘scandalmongering’ is pure theater and fun. But there are twop outstanding questions/concerns about Rick Hill:

      1) This is more evidence of Hill’s poor business decision making, from the guy who’s telling Montana to vote for him because of his “business experience” (his words).

      2) Where does Hill stand concerning the prosecution of his former partner? The Republicant platform makes clear their anti-cannabis agenda. Does Hill support that against Daubert?

      • Well, if it was a porn shop or head shop, you have a point, RK. But if this was shuffleboard or golf, then sit on MY point.
And yep, I have an anti-Montana Cannabis INDUSTRY agenda. Medical weed, sure. Industrial scale, corporate scale profits? I thought you libs hate such things, no matter the source of profit.

        • Dave, apperently, English is a foriegn language to you. What Rob said has nothing to do with what the business was. He was refering to two seperate facts – the fact that the business was closed down (indicating a poor business choice) and that Hill’s former partner is in deep water over his support for marijuana production. Your point is irrelavent to his statements. Sit on that and twirl.

        • I thought you libs hate such things, no matter the source of profit.

You’re kind of an idiot, aren’t you? Haven’t you been keeping up? Us ‘libs’ aren’t really liberal, according to the left. You only call me one because you think it an insult, one which clearly doesn’t apply, because you HATE LIBERALS!. You really need to sort out your priorities, Skinner.

The only thing that matters about this amazing corporate business venture by Hill is it’s compete failure. So you are welcome to sit on your point, but good luck getting your dick up your ass when your head is obviously occupying the space.

          • The Brothers K strike again!
Startups fail all the time. And startups often have silent partners, or passive investors, or figureheads to fill the blanks. Many startups never get past the conceptual stage. BFD.
And you’re wrong about my hating liberals. I’m a classical liberal myself, so how could I possibly hate myself? But I certainly dislike those who hijacked a perfectly fine word and ruined it.
As for progressives, socialists, Commies, Marxists, Trotskyites, Bolsheviks, Leninists, Paulestinians, Wobblies — contempt is given gladly.
            Sit on that….

            • Sorry pal. I can’t fit in the tiny orifice your head currently inhabits.

Yes, start-ups fail all the time. It’s usually not a good idea for Republicant asshole candidates like Hill to promote their awesome business experience when they are investing in start-ups that fail all the time, and in Hill’s case, all the time.

            • C’mon skinner….if you’re gonna be dumb you better be tough.

    • Akey is a former Hill staffer. He is currently the communications director for the Constitution Project in DC. Prior to that he worked for Envisions EMI, under <a href="; Shane Hedges (of vehicular homicide fame.) He has worked for Burns and worked for Hill for two years.

        • This guy Akey has quite the Mature Leisure lifestyle. Get this: The former Hill staffer belongs to more than 20 groups in the DC area.

Some of them are fairly normal, like one for hikers. Others are less normal, like one for unleashed brittany spanials.

Others are…off beat…there are a bunch of buddhism, eastern medicine and something called “emotional freedom technique.”

AND THEN THIS: Under “interests” on this profile page, he writes:

“human sexuality, sensuality and intimacy, polyamory” and later “speed dating.”

          According to wikipedia “polyamory”

Polyamory (from Greek) [poly], meaning “many” or “several”, and Latin amor, “love”) is the practice, desire, or acceptance of having more than one intimate relationship at a time with the knowledge and consent of everyone involved. Many[who?] contend that it is distinct from both swinging (which often emphasizes sex with others as merely recreational) or with polysexuality (which is attraction towards multiple genders and/or sexes)

Polyamory, often abbreviated as poly, is often described as consensual, ethical, or responsible non-monogamy. The word is sometimes used in a broader sense to refer to sexual or romantic relationships that are not sexually exclusive, though there is disagreement on how broadly it applies; an emphasis on ethics, honesty, and transparency all around is widely regarded as the crucial defining characteristic.

Yeah, Rick Hill formed a business with pothead Tom Daubert and his former employee who lists sleeping around and recreational multi-partner sex as among his ****publicly listed**** “interests.”

These three formed a business called MATURE LEISURE, INC.

  8. The more I think about it, the more I think that all three men should come forward forthwith and explain what they were doing, why, and what became of the venture. Were they doing business together, or together giving someone the business?

  9. Maybe it’s just another case of politics making strange board of directors members. Did their collaboration mature, or did it wither from excess leisure?

  13. I wish I could tell you that this venture was something more juicy, but Mature Leisure offered all-inclusive summer golf vacations in the Flathead, with Arizona seniors as the initial customers. The most relevant part of the story is that it was a spectacular failure though.
