Journalism for Sale at the Billings Gazette

An interesting phenomenon is developing at the Billings Gazette which has until now not received much attention.  The Gazette is now selling the opportunity to the oil, coal, and gas companies to purchase not just advertising, but reporting.

The Gazette hired Yellowstone County GOP chair and former Conrad Burns staffer Jennifer Owen as editor of something called the Montana Energy Review — a Billings Gazette quarterly publication, with an affiliated website describing the magazine as “comprehensive reporting on energy economics and policy.”

I’m told by a source in the industry that the energy magazine has both advertisers and “stakeholders”–companies that as investing partners helped determine the magazine’s scope.  Perhaps the Gazette was unable to get any of their current reporters to accept payments to write news with a particular slant.  Whatever the reason, they hired the chair of the local Republican party to do it.  After all, Owen is affiliated with an organization whose state convention featured a booth in which one could pay to shoot at a target labeled “wind energy.”

The Billings Gazette was also an apparent fan of the last Yellowstone County GOP chair, Jennifer Olsen. Olsen was featured in the Gazette’s 40 under 40 then disgraced by her racist remarks.

  1. I wonder if this is why the editor quit a couple of weeks ago?

  2. So, how come there’s no mention of Shannon Aguare’s little sovereign act? Been a week or so.
Oh, that’s right, he’s one of YOURS.

    • Larry Kralj, Environmental Rangers. | June 14, 2013 10:16 AM at 10:16 AM |

Um, Dave, you simply HATE the fact that Indian nations are sovereign! Your racism is showing. But hey, you’re a Pubbie! You gotta be you! Right? You know NOTHING about sovereignty, do you? Sad, so sad.

      • Larry Kralj, Environmental Rangers. | June 14, 2013 10:22 AM at 10:22 AM |

BTW, for the record, just HOW many Native legislators are there who are ReePubes???

Why is that, Dave? What IS it about the Pubbie Party that Natives don’t find attractive? Is it your racism? Heck, they should over LOOK that little fact, and concentrate on being good Christians……………BWHWHAHAHAHAHAAA!

Worship at the altar of KOCKH, the pagan god of the crhistofascist dinks! Hell, Kockh even SOUNDS like a pagan god from the Holy Buybull! The ancient ones knew how to name the shitbag gods, with a short, ugly sounding name! Kockh! And the followers of KOCKH were destroyed in the city of Kockistan! Kockh doesn’t exactly ROLL off the tongue un LESS one is a Pubbie!

Does Kockh roll off your tongue, Dave?

        • Why did I just KNOW that Crotch would flip the race card at the first opportunity? Yeah, the same guy flipping out about Barkus….what if Barkus had bashed his boat at Kwa Tak Nuk?
Shannon needs to come clean here. It’s not okay to be writing laws and then claim they don’t apply.
In fact, my Dadster and I were out at Piegan the other day for an automotive perfomance test and Dad got nailed for 88. Heck, we were on the reservation, we should be immune, too, right?
As for the Gazette….so what — the quarterly is a promo insert, it’s not like ad buyers want to be positioned next to a ProPublica hit piece on fracking. GMAFB.

          • Larry Kralj, Environmental Rangers. | June 14, 2013 12:06 PM at 12:06 PM |

Dave, the problem with you Pubbies is NOT that you’re all born again, it’s simply that you all were born yesterday! That’s why Dipshit Daines can run for congress, and the very FIRST thing he does is hold “listening sessions” on the Rocky Mountain Front! WHERE HAS DIPSHIT BEEN? How in the hell can a ReePube run for congress and NOT know shit about the Front? We have ONLY been discussing it for some one hundred YEARS now! And it’s pretty much settled! We LIKE it the way it is!

And sovereignty is the same thing! Every dipshit Pube that comes along has to CHALLENGE established, settled law that has been SETTLED for some hundred years now! Sad, so sad. Must be a horrible way to go through life. Oh well. Everything is new to a newbie!

And THAT is the same problem I have with outta staters comin’ here and runnin’ for office as ReePubes, folks like ms. fiddler, gen. skees, chump edmunds, etc. They get here and think, wow!, Montana ain’t NEARLY as f*cked up as where I came from, so, let’s get busy and f*ck it up! Happens every time. Just go look at Billings. From cow town to Kalifornication overnight! Unlike what Pastord Bulbdim likes to say, Montana is NOT a state of mind! It’s a real place with a real history, tradition, and people. It’s NOT all new all the time!

            • Larry, come on. Billings could only be Californicated if it was majority Democrat like Missoula. It’s still Billings.
Great Falls doesn’t count — you don’t have amenity migrants there, just long-established WJ Bryan populists raised on a cross of gold.

          • Dave, you would not be immune from state prosecution on the reservation unless you are an enrolled tribal member. I think the cops just got pissed because someone was able to give them the middle finger and legally get away with it so they went and leaked it to the media to make him look bad. Cops hate being put in their place. That being said its obvious the tribal police are corrupt as hell and arent going to be charging him either.

            • Abe, that was my point. Why should my Dad get whacked with a ticket when Shannon drives off for something mucho worso?
Equal protection under the laws and all that, ya know.

              • Your Dad got whacked holding a ticket? It looks like you have bigger problems than can be solved on a website, Skinhead.

You keep trying to point out that this is a partisan website. No shit, Sherlock. It says so right up there at the top. Obviously, so are you. So, not only are you a whiny little partisan weasel, you are a hypocritical whiny little partisan weasel. You have no point about your beloved father, other than that your Dad has no respect for law. ~spit~. Lot’s of other folk don’t either. You are just demanding that everybody have the same view that you do, about dear old dad. And if they don’t wail and moan about Dear Old Daddy compared to everyone else, then they aren’t good people. You demand the right to care about your own life and own concerns, and are stupid enough top demand that everyone else care about the same as you. Frankly, I hope your father fries for his crimes, speeding stupid mofo. What a dumb thing for his sorry ass to do. And you with him, even. Stupid, the both of you.

But no, you think everyone else ought to give a salient crap about your concerns? Grow up, Davey.

                • Speeding is a crime? Yep,
but driving drunk while tribal isn’t? Glad I helped you blow off some steam, Rob.

                  • Dave, 5 people died near Browning. any guess that alcohol was involved?

                    • Larry Kralj, Environmental Rangers. | June 16, 2013 7:14 PM at 7:14 PM |

Jesus, craig. Was there even a point to that post? You’re a sad case. Allow the family members to grieve in peace without your bullshit. I pity you.

                    • Larry, what’s sad is you excusing drunk driving as you have done repeatedly. Last fall I was T-boned by a drunk driver on my driver’s door. Damn near killed me.

                    • According to the AP, “The cause of the crash remains under investigation. But authorities say speed was a factor and that none of the seven people inside the truck were (sic) wearing seatbelts.” We don’t yet know whether booze was involved. There’s no need to speculate. The facts will be known soon enough.

                    • James, absolutely no need to speculate as alcohol has been confirmed by the MHP. I have no forgiveness in me as my daughter, son, and myself have all been hit by drivers who had been drinking. My daughter has permanent brain damage, my son’s life was forever altered, and my life nearly ended when I was T-boned and within a hair being forced over a guardrail onto train tracks 30 feet below.

                    • Larry Kralj, Environmental Rangers. | June 18, 2013 6:42 PM at 6:42 PM |

And craig, your experience with a drunk driver allowed you IMMEDIATELY AND CONCLUSIVELY to libel the folks involved in this accident be FORE even knowing any pertinent facts?! DAMN you’re good!…..or something.

You see, craig, I have NEVER supported drunk driving. What I DO oppose is the inordinate war on working and poor people by the cops and their outta control judicial system! THAT is bullshit! They DESTROY as many lives as do drunk drivers! Probably more!
.oo8?? Open container?? Daily breat tests?? Give me a f*cking BREAK!

                    • Larry, all I said was “… any guess that alcohol was involved?” How is that libel especially since the MHP has confirmed my suspicions? Someday I hope they nail your ass for drinking and driving before you do to innocent people similar to what happened to me and my children by SOB’s like you who claim some sort of right to drive impaired. That’s all there is ultimately, to protect the living and innocent.

                    • Larry Kralj, Environmental Rangers. | June 18, 2013 7:01 PM at 7:01 PM |

Don’t be a sore loser, craig. I simply handed your ass to you again, and you can’t stand that. Your implication, be FORE the people were even cold, was WAY outta line! Again, I pity you!

BTW, be LOW .008 AIN’T considered legally impaired! So, you lose again. Leave while you can.

                    • Larry, your time is coming and the victims of your arrogance to justify drinking and driving, unless you alter your ways. I pray that you do.

                    • Larry Kralj, Environmental Rangers. | June 18, 2013 7:07 PM at 7:07 PM |

                      Imprecatory prayers I’m sure!

                    • Larry, actually prayers of reclamation for your soul’s change of heart.

                    • Larry Kralj, Environmental Rangers. | June 18, 2013 8:58 PM at 8:58 PM |

craig, we are the old Soviet Union, dude. People didn’t have SHIT! They had to stand in line for three hours just to buy bread! But they had Vodka. LOTS of Vodka! The government made sure of that. For you see, when people are starving, and out of work, and have no prospects, nor hope, they drink! HEY, I didn’t invent that remedy. But I know it works.

And that’s where we’re at in this country too. The ReePubes destroyed the country, and now, they whine when people drink. WHAT THE FRIGGIN’ HELL DO YOU EXPECT THEM TO DO?! It’s only in perverse Pubbie world that they figured out a system to f*ck’em real good when they do!

            • It’s a well know fact that the Glacier County Sheriff’s Office is full of racists. They profile and harass Native Americans on a daily basis. GC Sheriffs are clearly mad that their attempt to destroy another Native American’s life was thwarted so they leaked the story with no evidence, just the word of an angry tribal hating officer. And when that did not work they took it to the next level. You would think they had better things to do, but since harassing Native Americans in priority number 1 for the GC Sheriffs I am not surprised they are continuing with their smear campaign. So sad that in 2013 we still have to deal with bigot cops.

              • Glacier Gal, are you aware that the deputies have the whole traffic stop on video? Are you aware that the sheriff is Vernon “Napi” Billedeaux? Sheriff Billedeaux’s bio is here Now what exactly makes him a racist? The undersheriff is Maurice Redhorn. Did you know he coached the freshman basketball team at Browning? What makes him a racist? Officer Judd Milender was honored at the Blackfeet Community College. What exactly makes him a racist?

Your tactic is underwhelming and beneath contempt.

              • Larry Kralj, Environmental Rangers. | June 20, 2013 7:03 PM at 7:03 PM |

Right you are, Glacier Gal. I call it the name of my new book, The Boner and the Badge! They give these little racist pukes a badge, and the NEXT thing you know, they’ve got one giNORmous hard on for Native Americans and poor people! Happens all the time. That badge takes ALL the blood carrying oxygen to the brain, and redirects it dee RECTLY to their little boner! Hence, the name of my book, The Boner and the Badge!

You see, many of these cop types have very, very little egos. Put a badge on them, and they turn into John Wayne! With a hard on for Natives and poor people! It’s a sad situation. They’re good little racists but bad cops.

                • Larry Kralj, Environmental Rangers. | June 20, 2013 7:15 PM at 7:15 PM |

p.s. And craig, I don’t know about you, but I actually WITNESSED first hand some of the most virulent racism among cops in this state! I was actually INVOLVED as a witness in the famous trial in Billings involving the three minority cops who WON a huge settlement against the city of Billings for racism! You see, dude, I could tell you f*cking actual STORIES instead of your pathetic google searches! Cops are some of the BIGGEST racists assholes around! Grow the hell UP! Your stoopid act gets real old real quick!

Ever testify in a racism trial?????????

                • Wrong you are Larry. You are quite the POS. Deputy Maurice Redhorn is related to Peter Red Horn who died in 1979. He was Blackfeet. At our dinner table he told us the story about Chief Two Guns White Calf. Peter claimed that the likeness of Chief Two Guns was used for the nickel. Peter was also the author of the “A Guide to the Spoken Blackfeet Indian Language Into English.”

JAYsus, craig! Stick with what you do best. LIABLE! I’ve been arrested at LEAST five times for DUI since you last liabled me! Where have you been??

Look, they cops have NOTHING on the dude. They’re pissin’ up a rope on this one, and you have to KNOW it, for you’re not as dumb as you come across. WHAT is their evidence??? Video?? Breathalizer??? Confession??

                    I vote for confession.

That’s all I’ve got to say about that. Well, not really.

Augare is the NEW ReePube equivalent to Dopey Reeburp!….almost, but NOT!

                    • Larry Kralj, Environmental Rangers. | June 21, 2013 7:52 PM at 7:52 PM |

ReeePubes. Doncha just luv’em for the comic relief they provide? I do.

                    • Larry Kralj, Environmental Rangers. | June 22, 2013 7:01 AM at 7:01 AM |

Problem is two fold for the morons wanting to hang Augare. First, they know absolutely NOTHING about jurisdiction! Because if they did, they wouldn’t be making such dumbassed arguments. Cops do NOT go into another’s jurisdiction, for they have NO authority there. ONLY a moronic cop would do so! The dumbassed cop is the real offender here! He needs to go back to cop school and STOP watching cop shows on TV! He AIN’T Dirty Hairy who violates all rules and laws!

Look, ONLY a dumbass cop with OUT any good judgement goes ONTO the Rez in pursuit of a supposed crime of this nature! What’s to be gained? Nothing. He should have just stopped and waited for another day to harass Natives! He doesn’t understand his role. He’s a boner with a badges, a dumbass cop with a hard on for Indians!

Second, the morons calling for Augare’s head ARE making dumbassed arguments to bolster their hatred of the sovereignty issue! THEY HATE THE FACT that Native Americans have sovereignty! Sure, it’s pura racism, but it’s who they are! I mean, look at skinner. A transplant from back east who’s gonna come here and explain water rights to native Montanans! HEllo! Dude wouldn’t know water rights from potato blight! It’s simply birtherism writ LARGE! In other words, take a dumbassed halfassed idea, call it the truth, and RUN with it! Ms. Oily Tits has got NOTHING on our little Oily Twits posting here!

And then we have ALL the Pastord Buldbim type folks who are gonna come here and remake Montana in an image that they have in their demented minds. Can the ReePubes GET any more arrogant?

These are some sad, pathetic, hateful indeeviduals! I almost feel sorry for them, for that is a terrible way to go through life!

                    • Larry Kralj, Environmental Rangers. | June 22, 2013 7:03 AM at 7:03 AM |

I will offer up a joyful noise as a prayer for their pathetic souls! It’s worth a shot!

    • Augere should be held accountable, no matter what party and justice must be served.

  3. This is news? This is American journalism! At least they are open about it now.

    • Drunks for Aguare | June 14, 2013 2:09 PM at 2:09 PM |

I agree. It sounds like the Billings Gazette is taking a stab at running a trade magazine to make a few extra bucks. And everyone knows that trade magazines are slanted towards the industry they are serving.

I would not call it “yellow journalism”. If you want yellow journalism, read The High Country News.

      • Larry Kralj, Environmental Rangers. | June 14, 2013 3:13 PM at 3:13 PM |

That used to be a fairly good magazine, Drunks. What happened to it?

      • I mean that American “journalism” has always been in the side pocket of the companies that own the news outlets, so that it’s always been trade journalism masquerading as the real deal. Politicians should tremble and spit when a real journalist enters the room. Instead they go to parties together and stroke each other during candidate debates.

There are some journalists about, but they don’t work for the big outlets. A newspaper opening a trade journal is like Mustang Ranch – honest advertising.

    • Right, no big deal folks –this kind of thing happens in the third world every day. Move along, move along

  4. HCN is still around and as watermelonish as ever.

      • Drunks for Aguare | June 14, 2013 9:20 PM at 9:20 PM |

I would have to concur….my label of yellow journalism is inappropriate…watermelon journalism is more on target.

        I retract my previous post.

  5. They should disclose that the coal conpany determines the slant and the content- otherwise it’s pure and simple corruption.

    • Drunks for Aguare | June 16, 2013 9:44 PM at 9:44 PM |

Coal companies simply report facts. Obstructionist environmental groups report views, Pretty cut and dried.

      • Coal companies FAIL to report and take responsibility for all the adverse health effects for over a century, not including coal ash sludge ponds leaks, devastation to watersheds and that doesn’t even begin to evaluate all the external costs which corporations love to do by ‘Privatize the profit, and socialize the risk’ so our Commons are contatminated and never properly restored. How can Peabody and Arch Coal fix the emissions they’ve pumped and dumped into the atmosphere? Now we’ve got fracking, which is about half, but the thousands of methane leaks (methane is ten times more adverse than C02) caused from the extensive gas fields MUST be capped and utlilized for on-site energy generation, which is smart and SAVES corporations $$$$.

  6. We need journalism that promotes all effective energy development, including our abundant wind resources in addition to the ‘hell for leather’ oil and gas marathons which
are helping the economy but we should have oversight to make sure our water and property rights not compromised. Republicans in Texas, Wyoming, Oklahoma and even Iowa (Iowa is 10th in wind energy BUT has more wind turbines than Montana, and our state 1st or 2nd in wind energy potential!) are embrace the windfarm successes, so why are we still ‘sitting on our hands’ in Montana, especially when today’s wind gusts!

  7. You talk about “journalism” for sale, try not to gag if you read this…

Here we have “information” compiled by the Drovers CattleNetwork and Monsanto.

    Okey, dokey…

  10. We might be inclined to save Journalism, but why isn’t anyone talking about how low a percentage, the congress’s Favorability has become in the USA?

A survey, from Public Policy Polling, showed Congress with a mere 9 percent favorability rating.

Congress didn’t fare well when compared against a wide swath of generally disliked staples of modern life.

Asked for their preference between Congress and lice, the microscopic insects prevail 67-19 percent. Ditto colonoscopies (58-31 percent), root canals (65-32 percent), and being stuck in traffic (56-34 percent).
