Go read Don Pogreba’s latest post, “Representative Daines Golfs While Montana Burns” at Intelligent Discontent. Then ask yourself whether this state can’t do better in the congressional representative department.
This week the Lolo Creek Complex wildfire blew up, expanding to over 8,000 acres. Montanans homes were destroyed. But Congressman Steve Daines spent the day in the Flathead golfing with GOP Speaker of the House John Boehner. Daines charged $15,000 a pop for the privilege of joining him for a round of golf at a fancy private club in Whitefish, after which Boehner hosted a fancy VIP fundraiser for Daines on a second golf course in Big Fork.
Meanwhile, residents of Lolo’s Sleeman Creek have been evacuated and an emergency team has taken over management of what is now the nation’s highest priority fire. There is a state of emergency in effect across 31 counties, authorizing the use of Montana National Guard, and numerous aviation assets are being assigned to the fire.
But neither Congressman Daines’ nor his staffers are in attendance, making clear that he’s more interested in teeing off with Boehner than stepping up for Montanans.
