Return of the Jedi

In 2010, the Empire struck back, hard. The Dark Side destroyed the Democrats, the first piece of sizable revenge exacted by the GOP ever since their Death Star (which had dominated the galaxy for two decades) was destroyed in the span of four years by Schweitzer, Tester, Bullock, McCulloch, Lindeen and Juneau.

The 2010 elections were bought, not won. There were millions of dollars brought in illegally by the GOP’s wealthy friends. Much of it was funnelled in by shell groups from undisclosed sources, and mostly by one particular front group called Western Tradition Partnership. This group is currently being prosecuted civilly in the Montana courts for their dirty 2010 campaign activity. Of the estimated million they brought in, none of it was reported nor the sources disclosed. In other words, we still don’t know who, exactly, owns the GOP-controlled Montana Legislature.

I’m told that the same shady GOP Darth Vaders who operated in 2010 were back at work this cycle, trying to buy themselves victories in city races around the state. They came up empty-handed, humiliated. Like John Sinrud, backed by the Montana Realtors, who wants to build high-rise condos and strip malls on farm land in and around Whitefish. Or Chuck Denowh, who is Rick Hill’s chief advisor but apparently took a hiatus to try to work some of the city races in the Flathead and elsewhere.

They were working hard behind the scenes trying to get victories. It hasn’t been calculated yet how many hundreds of thousands of dollars these losers spent on city commission races around Montana, but not a single Tea party candidate won election in Bozeman, Whitefish, Kalispell, Great Falls, Helena, Billings or Missoula last week.

Political Quick Hits

We Take It Back

The Great Falls Tribune reported this week that the Great Falls Chamber of Commerce has flip-flopped, rescinding its endorsement of embattled Great Falls TEA Party leader Cyndi Baker, who is running against Mary Jolley.  When asked about whether the reason for the un-endorsement had anything to do with the fact that  Baker had threatened local schools with “bad publicity” if they didn’t offer her a government job as a liaison to the TEA Party, a Chamber representative said that was “part of it.”

Rehberg’s Lawsuit Continues to Make Waves

Dems continue to pound Rehberg for his lawsuit against Billings firefighters this week, but that’s not the only controversy the lawsuit has raised. Some Democrats are upset that Attorney General candidate Jesse Laslovich has found an unusual source for his campaign treasurer and financial support in Cliff and John Edwards. The pair are, respectively, the Rehberg’s lawyer and his son.  Both work at the Edwards firm, which represent the Rehbergs.  Rep. Carolyn Pease-Lopez (D-House District 42) posted on her Facebook page this week:

I just learned some disturbing news. The law firm that is representing Rehberg in his lawsuit agains the Billings Fire department are supporters and donors of the Jesse Laslovich campaign for A.G. One of the lawyers is even his campaign treasurer. What is Laslovich thinking! This is ridiculous.

Flathead Fallout

The latest political scandal in the Flathead keeps getting bigger.  James Conner of the Flathead Memo and former State Representative Mike Jopek have some harsh words for the Flathead County Commission today.  Here’s a sneak preview.  The entire post is not to be missed:

Once only landowners did have the vote — and those landowners had to be white men. There are those who think that’s how things should be today.

Flathead County Republicans: Renters Aren’t Real Citizens

Flathead County planning surveyIn the United States of America today, it would be illegal to allow only wealthy property owners to vote.  So the Republican Flathead County Commissioners have done the next best thing.

They sent out a survey to the ‘doughnut’ residents (people who live in a ring around the outer edge of the city of Whitefish) asking who they prefer to manage planning and zoning, the county or city of Whitefish.  Instead of mailing surveys to the registered voters in the area in question, they sent the surveys only to corporations and property owners.

The the lack of transparency seems to be an issue here is well, though the county claims that, “the survey is not a voting ballot measure,” [GOP County Commissioner Jim] Dupont said in the Flathead Beacon. Commissioners also apparently  believe it “doesn’t require a public notice process” either.

It’s just a “tool in the toolbox” in the effort to bring clarification to an issue in need of it.

Over at the Informed Whitefish forum, word is that some sixty surveys went to a single Whitefish address (one for each parcel of land the individual owns in the area) while others expressed outrage that many of the surveys were mailed to out-of-area addresses – including Texas, California, Canada, Switzerland and England.

In fact, some say most of the surveys that the County mailed went to owners who do not live in Whitefish: Forty percent of the survey votes were actually mailed out of Montana.  Flathead County surveys our Canadian neighbors to the north 300 times.  Texas gets 70 votes, Missoula 60, and California got nearly 160 surveys.

Here’s Commissioner Jim Dupont explaining the merits of the GOP-ers’ plan:

“Then we’ll have exactly what the people in the doughnut think because I don’t know – I hear so much one way or the other,” Dupont said. “I don’t know why anyone would want to complain about it. It’s a simple answer.”

Perhaps next the Commissioners can throw out any surveys from women and people of color.  Whitefish is 45 percent renters, Flathead County is 27 percent and Montana is 31 percent.

Asian Massage: Conservative GOP Councilman Might Get Unhappy Ending

A hard-core, conservative, Republican religious politician, getting caught doing business with an erotic massage parlor? Yawn. That’s become such a routine event in our society, it’s barely even newsworthy.

But somebody must report this mundane stuff, so it falls to Cowgirl Blog.

It appears that Billings city councilman Denis Pitman makes a tidy living as a commercial landlord, by renting space to the Fuji Spa.

On its website, Fuji Spa describes itself as a massage parlor, spa and “escort business,” which offers “table showers” and “beautiful asian massage girls”, is open 24 hours, and accepts cash only. The website also instructs patrons who visit the premises to please enter through the rear entrance of the establishment, and notes that there is an ATM on site.

There are, in fact, many such establishments in Billings, as you can see from the Billings Gazette’s special advertising section devoted to them. Such massage parlors are legally okay.  It’s not like these places are brothels, after all.

And this must be Pitman’s line of reasoning, because Pitman, by all appearances, is your basic religious conservative piece of work. He brags about his conservative street cred (says he is “the most conservative member of the city council,”), is a big-time Tea Partier, went to seminaries for his schooling, and is actually a man of the cloth. He is a minister. He advertises his services as a theologist and “non-denominational Christian minister” who, according to his own website, will perform religious ceremonies and rites for a small fee.

Pitman runs a tropical fish shop, too, and also made an unsuccessful run for legislature a few years ago.

So this guy is quite a renaissance man, and has a diversified portfolio.

And he is all family values, all the time. Check out his website. He’s a family man for sure. In fact his website’s traffic counter records not how many unique visitors have viewed his site, but how many “families” have viewed it. On his Facebook page he posts  family-oriented advice to his public, messages such as “Little Fockers is not appropriate viewing for anyone in my family except me and my wife.”

To be clear, there is nothing at all to suggest that he has ever collected rent in the form of a table shower or massage. And also, it must be noted that he once rented space to a medical marijuana provider, and took heat for it, and defended himself by saying that as long as the activities on the premises are legal, he would rent it to the tenant.

Perhaps Pitman is truly a libertarian at heart and not a conservative, who believes drugs and sex, even if proferred as goods for sale, must be off limits to government regulation or religious judgment. Probably not.

Whether Fuji Spa is conducting moral or proper activities is of course something that only Fuji’s satisfied clients could attest to. But does Pitman, who is up for relection, actually believe, in his own mind, that his tenant is behaving properly and morally?  That’s a question that Pitman, a theologist who no doubt is aware that the Lord knows what is in our hearts and minds, should have to answer (And That Right Soon).

Political Quick Hits: Helena City Races

Commenters here have pointed out that write-ins will be accepted in the the Helena Citizens Council election.  The Helena Citizens Council is an advisory council to the Helena City Commission.  Matthieu Oppedahl, Jessica Peterson,  Kim Abbott and Michael Hand are running as write-in candidates.  The race attracted attention after it was revealed that Bobette Madonna, the leader of a group who was ousted from the Montana TEA Party over its comments advocating violence against gays, is seeking election for the Helena city board.

Next up, Campaign finance reports show that Lorabelle Behlmer, the right-wing candidate for Helena City Commission has been endorsed by the Montana Association of Realtors PAC, and they have donated the maximum contribution to her campaign. The Realtors are working across the state to elect hard right candidates in places like Billings and Whitefish.   In contrast, Katherine Haque-Hausrath and Commissioner Matt Elsaesser  have been endorsed by the Montana Conservation Voters.  You can read about MCV’s endorsements in other towns here.

Finally, it appears that Lorabelle Behlmer has self-financed the majority (over $1,500.00) of her campaign expenses.  She has been reporting “Debts and Loans not yet paid” to herself for yard signs and other expenses, as you can see from the attached pdf of her finance report here. However,  debts to yourself  are actually Candidate Personal Contributions or Loans.  This puts Lorabelle’s statements that she “sees support from throughout the community and from people outside of Helena” in a slightly different light.  Perhaps she didn’t mean financial support.
