Would-be “Peaceful Ethnic Cleanser” from Montana Makes National News

A white supremacy group leader who has called for a “peaceful ethnic cleansing” that would clear parts of North America for only white people was profiled on the Rachel Maddow show this week.

Here’s the clip:

The Human Rights Network has done some research on this group, which calls itself the National Policy Institute.

In 2011, they held an event at the National Press Club to release its report called “Majority Strategy: Why the GOP Must Win White America.” The report urged the Republican Party to “reach in” to its base of white voters instead of “reaching out” to minorities. The report told the GOP to embrace immigration restrictions, end civil rights laws, and stop all forms of affirmative action.

The group’s leader, Richard Spencer, recently moved the group from Georgia to Whitefish. He says: “It is perfectly feasible for a white state to be established on the North American continent,” adding, “I have a dream.”

You’ll want to go read James Conner’s post on this, which is up at the Flathead Memo.

Today’s Must-Read Political Blog Post

by Cowgirl

Is up at the Flathead Memo, where James Conner writes about Rep. Steve Lavin’s property owners voting rights act. A sample:

Lavin’s bill does not require the property owners to be white Christian men, but amendments to that effect are always possible, given potential unconstitutionality is not that credible a deterrent to Republican excesses.

Rep. Lavin is a Republican from Kalispell.

“Top Two” proposal offered by GOP

by Cowgirl

Rep. Scott Reichner, R-Bigfork, has introduced a bill to change our election laws so that libertarians can no longer gum up the works for the GOP. This is an effort that we all presumed would be made this session, given the humiliation suffered by Denny Rehberg when a full seven percent of right wing voters walked way from him and voted Libertarian.

James Conner at the Flathead Memo has already written a couple of good posts on this that you’ll also want to read.

And so Reichner has now been assigned by his party to propose that we replace our current primary election with a “Top Two” primary system. Continue reading

In Flathead County, the Price of Transparency is $82.50 Per Email

A Flathead County official is claiming that citizens who want to see the public documents related to Dennis Rehberg’s boat crash must pay a photocopying fee of $82.50–even if no copies are made.

Flathead area blogger James Conner contacted the county requesting that a PDF of the Rehberg boat crash documents be made available electronically.   He was told that the hefty photocopying fee must be paid even if no photocopies were produced.  You can see the exchange for yourself at the Flathead Memo.

People of the Flathead, this is your county government in action.  If it costs them $82.50 to push the send button on an email, I’d hate to see what they charge for answering their own phones.

GOP Gov Candidates: Where Are They Now?

Have you been eagerly awaiting news of what’s next for the crackerjack slate of GOP-ers who failed to win their party’s nomination for Governor?

In an email  presumably addressed to the one “Gentleman” who must have inquired along these lines, the former running mate of international prostitute guide-book author Neil Livingstone has provided an answer to that question.

As James Conner at the Flathead Memo reports, former state Senator Ryan Zinke (R-Whitefish) has begun raising money for a super-PAC.  The PAC is called “SOFA,” though it is not meant to intentionally invoke the couch-potato-ish manner in which Livingstone and Zinke attempted to fund their own unsuccessful campaign for Governor and Lt. Gov of Montana.   Instead, Zinke will be raising money for this super-PAC via the no-fail method of selling water bottles online.  Stylish men’s sleeveless t-shirts like this one are also on offer, which you’ll want to order now before the TEA Partiers buy them all up.

Zinke’s entire email is pasted below:
Gentleman,
I am pleased to announce the stand-up of Special Operations for America (SOFA) and the soforamerica.org website. SOFA is a super Political Action Committee (PAC) with a simple mission:  Defeat the Obama train wreck by leveraging various Special Operations organizations and military members in the key battleground states.  As you know, the military is not politically monolithic and it is critical that all active and prior serviceman are both informed and energized.  SOFA will be the voice of the Special Operations community by providing well researched and documented media presentations that expose the truth about the state of our military and related National Security interests.  We are all in this fight together and with your help, we shall prevail.  Please pass the website to all.  An electronic copy of the SOFA organization and specific objectives is available upon request.
Keep your Powder Dry and your Aim True,

Senator Ryan Zinke Chairman
Special Operations for Americahttp://soforamerica.org/

More Hollow Gestures

Last year,  the Flathead Memo caught Congressman Rehberg walking unashamedly behind a fire truck in Kalispell’s 2011 Independence Day parade.   The gesture was somewhat hollow because, at the same time, he was suing the Billings firefighters who risked their lives to save his scrub brush last year. Rehberg decided to drop the lawsuit only when he realized it was tanking his campaign.

Since that time, things have only gone downhill.  This year, the Flathead GOP has simply taped a picture of Rehberg directly to the firetruck.
